Netflix giveth and it taketh away. Though there are many new additions coming to the popular streaming service this July, many old classics are cycling out. Below, we’ve compiled every departing scripted series, as well as singled out a few you may want to check out before it’s too late. You best get crackin’ — 10 shows are gone as of July 1.
Leaving July 1:
“Beauty and the Beast” Seasons 1-3
“Harper’s Island” The Complete Series
“Hawaii Five-O” (1968) Seasons 1-10
“Knight Rider” Seasons 1-4
Indiewire Pick: “Louis C.K.: Hilarious” (2009)
Okay, so technically this isn’t a TV show, but any fan of “Louie” is likely also a fan of Louis. “Hilarious” is exactly that — Louis’ performance ended up winning Best Comedy Album at the Grammys and earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations. If you’ve caught up on all of “Louie,” consider this an 80-minute bonus feature. Don’t miss out on any of his insightful stand-up specials, especially when they’re available on Netflix.
“Melrose Place 2.0” and “Melrose Place” Seasons 1-7
Indiewire Pick: “Mission: Impossible” Seasons 1-7
Of all the old classics getting booted from the new generation’s preferred viewing medium, “Mission: Impossible” is perhaps the most confusing. Netflix is removing the series the same month the new film is coming out. Granted, Tom Cruise’s big screen adventures as Ethan Hunt don’t closely resemble the impossible missions conquered by Steven Hill & Co. But the name recognition alone should lead to a spike in viewership given the popularity of the film franchise. Perhaps Paramount is trying to generate a little more press for the film by removing these seasons from Netflix, and thus getting writers across the world talking about “Mission Impossible” for no legitimate reason whatsoever. If that’s the case, I’m happy to help.
“The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones” Volumes 1-3
“Wings” Seasons 1-8
If I was going to pick a consensus favorite film for the Indiewire community, it might very well be “Sideways.” I’m not arguing all of you wonderful readers love Alexander Payne’s early aughts foray into wine country, but I’d be willing to bet most of you at least like it. A lot. So if a) I’m correct, and b) you somehow haven’t seen “Wings,” let me explain to you why you must in just three simple words: Thomas. Haden. Church. The man sparked such a fervor in 2004 he landed an Oscar nomination, but long before Jack had his face smashed in by a heartbroken Stephanie (Sandra Oh), the world fell in love with Lowell Mather. So stop stalling and get to watching everyone’s favorite airport handyman in “Wings” before it’s too late.
“X-Men: Evolution” Season 1
Leaving July 15:
“Dragnet” Seasons 1-4
“Miami Vice” Seasons 1-5
Leaving July 25:
“The Inbetweeners” Season 3
Leaving July 30:
“Leave It To Beaver” Seasons 1-6
“Magnum P.I.” Seasons 1-8
