Principal photography has begun on psychological thriller “Blackbird,” which will shoot five weeks in the south of England.
Recent Cannes Best Actress winner Rooney Mara (“Carol”) stars opposite Ben Mendelsohn (“Animal Kingdom,” “Bloodline”) in David Harrower’s adaptation of his Olivier Award-winning stage play, which was an intense examination of the damaged love between ex-con Ray (Mendelsohn), who is trying to get beyond his imprisonment after his affair with underage Una (Mara) 15 years ago. Then she suddenly shows up at his office.
“I am relishing the opportunity to bring this vital, highly-charged story to the screen,” said Australian stage director Andrews, who is making his directing debut. “David has written a beautiful, brutal script and I have two outstanding actors in the roles of Ray and Una.”
Andrews’ most recent plays include London hit “A Streetcar Named Desire,” starring Gillian Anderson and Ben Foster, and Sydney Theatre Company’s touring production of “The Maids” at the Lincoln Center Festival, starring Cate Blanchett and Isabelle Huppert.
The key crew include director of photography Thimios Bakatakis (“The Lobster,” “Dogtooth”), production designer Fiona Crombie (“Snowtown,” “Macbeth”), hair and make-up designer Jan Sewell (“Everest,” “X-Men: First Class”), costume designer Steven Noble (BAFTA-nominee for “The Theory of Everything”) and editor Nick Fenton (“Life,” “Submarine”).
