Twenty years after it largely shamed her, Elizabeth Berkley is finally owning “Showgirls” — as she should.
Berkley has voiced her displeasure with regard to the film’s tepid initial reception over the years. She once called the reaction to the film “cruel,” and the experience “humiliating,” even saying she quit dancing for a while because of it. But in the two decades since “Showgirls” was released, it has absolutely attained cult classic status, and it seems like Berkley is finally embracing it. In front of 4,000 people at a Cinespia screening at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, she made her first public appearance associated with the film since it came out — and it was pretty awesome.
“Tonight is like this magical full-circle moment where I actually didn’t get to experience the sweetness of the screening with a crowd that embraced it,” she said. “I wanted to thank you guys for giving me this gift of truly getting a full-circle moment of experiencing the joy with you because you guys and the love you have for this movie have made this the cult film that it is.”
