If you haven’t seen “Borgen,” stop what you’re doing right now and watch all three seasons. It’s one of the best political dramas in recent memory, a very relatable show set among the power players of the Danish political scene, and which in a progressive move, puts a woman in the lead role, “The Duke Of Burgundy” star Sidse Babett Knudsen in her breakout international performance. So it was probably inevitable that an american remake was going to happen. In fact, HBO has been sitting on the rights to the show for a while now, and there has been some impatience for the series to get redone for stateside audiences.
So it seems HBO is starting to get the ball rolling. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the network is looking at “The Wire” genius David Simon to put his pen to the adaptation of the show. And it’s a good fit. The politically minded Simon could certainly inject a “Borgen” with the right flavor it needs for an american take, and he’s already dramatized messy politics at city and state levels, so going national would be the next logical step.
But we’ll see if that happens. Right now, Simon is focused on finishing his highly anticipated upcoming miniseries “Show Me A Hero.” But “Borgen” under Simon’s guidance? I’d love to see it. However, there’s still more cookin’ for Simon including a project about the ’70s porn world, so we’ll see which takes focus next.
