“Tangerine” discovery Mya Taylor has signed on to play renowned transgender rights activist, Marsha P. Johnson in “Happy Birthday, Marsha!” — which will begin principal photography this June in New York City.
Written and directed by Reina Gossett and Sasha Wortzel (“We Came to Sweat”), “Happy Birthday, Marsha!” is about legendary trans artist & activist Marsha P. Johnson, and her life in the hours before the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Johnson, along with Sylvia Rivera (who will be played by Eve Lindley, who was featured in Bruce Weber’s Barneys campaign featuring trans models), was instrumental in starting the riots that spanned several days in June 1969. The pair went on to be leading activists for trans rights until their deaths.
The film is being produced by Luisa Conlon (“Obvious Child”) with Zackary Drucker (“Transparent”) as consulting producer and Arthur Jafa set as director of photography.
