Amy Winehouse was a media sensation before her untimely death, mainly because of her unpredictable behavior and battle with substance abuse. No wonder some have forgotten the deeply personal, heartwarming person Winehouse truly was, and filmmaker Asif Kapadia exposes the relatable and vulnerable sides of the artist in his upcoming documentary, “Amy.”
In a new clip from the film, a teenage Winehouse sings a candid, jazzy rendition of “Happy Birthday” to her friend. Even though she’s being playful and joking around in the home-movie footage, it’s clear that her voice is undeniably talented and that she was already on her way to becoming an artist ahead of her time.
A24 will hold screenings of “Amy” in New York and Los Angeles on July 3. “Amy” opens nationwide on July 10. Check out the clip above.
