No one could forget Drew Barrymore’s iconic opening scene in the 1996 cult hit “Scream.” A stalker toys with her over the phone, kills her boyfriend for answering a question incorrectly, then kills her before she can escape. MTV revamped Barrymore’s scene for a more modern take on “Scream” in the first 8 minutes of their upcoming TV adaptation.

Bella Thorne takes on Barrymore’s role as the first victim of the white-masked killer. The clip shows the killer’s cat-and-mouse game with his or her victims, using laptops, texts and Snapchat-style videos to manipulate them before laying the final dagger in them. It also sets up background for the string of murders: a cyberbullying attack on two girls after a video of them together was posted and went viral. The first eight minutes make it clear that although it’s influenced by the films, “Scream” will have its own twist.
“Scream” premieres Tuesday, June 30 at 10pm on MTV. Check out the first eight minutes of the show above.
