Generally speaking, animated fare for kids usually features cute creatures doing outrageous things all wrapped in a grand adventure. It’s fine tuned for small ones, engineered to sell spinoff merchandise, and if critics and adults happen to like it too, that’s a bonus. But Pixar doesn’t follow the rules. They’ve long been able to take ambitious or seemingly unsalable concepts — old man tries to save his house; robot falls in love while cleaning up a ruined Earth — and turn them into blockbusters.
So, the prospects are good for their latest “Inside Out.” It received great reviews out of Cannes (read ours), and once again, they are telling the kind of story that’s hard to even summarize on paper. The movie is told through the varying emotions of a young girl dealing with life’s challenges, including a move to a new city. And you can see how director Pete Docter and co. bring it all to life with these three new clips.
“Inside Out’ arrives on June 19th.
