READ MORE: ‘Masters of Sex’ Renewed for Season 3 (Along with ‘Ray Donovan’) at Showtime
A new trailer for Showtime’s “Masters of Sex” reveals human sexuality researchers Masters (Michael Sheen) and Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) navigating a relatively conservative (but changing) playing field, as they plunge forward into the rest of the country with their research. This coming season, set in 1966, will thrust the controversial researchers into a national conversation as their sex study is unveiled to the public. They will go on a tour explaining their work on sexual relationships and problems — in the midst, of course, of a historic sexual and cultural revolution that they help to initiate by documenting and researching human sexual responses.
Their foray into an adventure grappling with the politics of their work is hinted at in the trailer, as is the inevitable obstacle of public disapproval (masked by thinly veiled attempts to maintain professionalism). Naturally, the pair experience a host of inter-personal conflicts along the way as well. “Masters of Sex” balances across a space that not only deals with the actual issues of maintaining intimate relationships through conflict, but also the pioneering research of Masters and Johnson through much pushback from outsiders — and the third season is definitely no exception.
The third season of “Masters of Sex” will premiere July 12 at 10pm on Showtime and its online partners.
