Normally, teaser trailers aren’t worth more than the few seconds it takes to watch them. Usually meant to indicate tone or just remind people a show exists, teaser trailers don’t usually drop massive spoilers for a season no one has seen yet. Well, most teasers aren’t made for HBO’s “The Leftovers.”
In the above teaser for the hotly-anticipated Season 2, not a single cast member from the melancholic (and masterful) first season is shown. Instead, there’s a long line of cars, stretching out as if stuck in traffic in Los Angeles. Except they’re not in Los Angeles. They’re in the desert outside Jarden, TX. Soon, you realize no cars are heading in the other direction. Soon after that, you realize why.
When it was announced the second season of “The Leftovers” would be set in Texas, many wondered what could explain such a drastic shift in direction. After all, much of the main cast is remaining — including Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, and more — so, how would the show explain all of them (presumably) moving to a new location? Many others also wondered what showrunner Damon Lindelof would do after he used up all of the novel in Season 1, ending that portion of the TV adaptation almost exactly the same as the ending of the book.
Check out the trailer above for at least part of your answer, and get ready for what’s sure to be a fascinating second season this fall.
