Superhero scoop culture is so competitive at the moment, that some outlets run with only the faintest of information, hoping by getting out there first, they can be in front of the train should that intel ever prove to be accurate, and real discussions begin. Back in 2013, there was quite a lot of chatter about who might play Lex Luthor in “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” and Bryan Cranston, who just finishing up “Breaking Bad,” was said to be up for the role. But as it turns out, it was completely untrue.
“Not one conversation, it was all fan-driven,” he told MTV. “They’re thinking, ‘Who could play Lex Luthor? Who’s bald who could be menacing? Oh, Walter White, we can get that guy!’ So, it’s like, that’s not very inspiring casting…”
And Cranston is right, it’s not inspiring casting at all. He had just wrapped a bunch of seasons of a show where he was a monster, so why would you want an actor to redo that kind of part in a different register? The nice thing about Jesse Eisenberg in the role is that we’ve never really seen him do this kind of thing. Sure, he was sort of an asshole in “The Social Network,” but it’ll be interesting to see how he portrays a character that is one of Superman’s greatest foes.
So, this is mostly just a reminder that sometimes, if it sounds too good to be true…. Check out the MTV interview segment below followed by the teaser for Crackle series “SuperMansion” featuring a voice cast which includes Cranston, Seth Green, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, Jillian Bell, Nick Kroll, and Chris Pine.
