“The Lego Movie” and “Jump Street” duo will direct the next “Star Wars” anthology movie, which will be released May 25, 2018. Obviously “Lego Movie”‘s pop cultural savvy made a great impression on Kathleen Kennedy, Lawrence Kasdan, and Disney because Chris Miller & Phil Lord now get to play in the industry’s biggest franchise universe to make the Han Solo origin movie. (“Chronicle” director Josh Trank had previously been signed to direct the second standalone but dropped out.)
Scripted by Kasdan and son Jon Kasdan, the story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel made famous by Harrison Ford, whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.
Since their “Clone High” animated series, Miller & Lord have specialized in smart, self-reflexive, pop cultural riffing, which carried over into “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” the “21 Jump Street” theatrical reboot, and “The LEGO Movie.” But those were comedies so this will be a dramatic, action-packed step up (albeit with plenty of wit).
