A lot of guys start to panic about not having found The One when they’re about to hit the big 3-0, especially when they’ve just ended a long-term relationship with the woman they thought they were gonna marry.
But Ravi Patel turned his romantic and existential crisis into opportunity by making a documentary about his search for love in the last place he thought he’d look: traditional matchmaking. Taking a page from his parents’ very traditional, very happy marriage, Ravi flies all over the country and to India to meet “matrimonial candidates” — with his sister Geeta the co-director/camerawoman in tow — in the crowd-pleasing “Meet the Patels.”
The result is a culturally specific but universally resonant romantic comedy about how love and families are much more complicated than we usually give them credit for.
“Meet the Patels” opens September 11.
