READ MORE: Watch: Rachel McAdams Wants Jake Gyllenhaal Out of the Ring in ‘Southpaw’ Clip
A bulked-up Jake Gyllenhaal is taking center stage in “Southpaw,” a propulsive boxing drama with sights set on awards glory. From “Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua, “Southpaw” stars Gyllenhaal as Billy “The Great” Hope, Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World. When a family tragedy strikes and he loses custody of his daughter, Billy enters the battle of his life as he struggles to become a contender once again and win back those he loves.
The film, which co-stars Forest Whitaker and Rachel McAdams, premiered to awards buzz last month at the Shanghai International Film Festival, with Gyllenhaal receiving rapturous praise for his performance. “Southpaw” also features a score from the late James Horner.
The Weinstein Company has already released a few trailers for their Oscar hopeful, but there’s still ample reason to check this new one out. It’s set to Eminem’s “Kings Never Die,” which plays up the film’s intense mood and establishes an intriguing theme. And yes, Gyllenhaal still looks terrific in this role.
