The trailer for Peter Sollett’s “Freeheld” has been released (exclusively via Buzzfeed), and is it ever devastating.
Based on the Oscar winning documentary short that details the domestic partnership battle fought by lesbian couple Laurel Hester (played by Julianne Moore) and Stacie Ardeen (played by Ellen Page) when Hester is diagnosed with cancer, it looks like it could be a mighty new addition to the LGBT rights film canon — and is coming at what seems like the perfect time for audiences to learn how horrifying legal battles were for gay couples just a decade ago.
The film also screams Oscar for both Moore and Page (not to mention Steve Carell as their openly gay attorney), which in addition to possible acting nominations for Lily Tomlin (“Grandma”), Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara (both for “Carol”). Interestingly with regard to Page (or Tomlin, for that matter), she’d become the first openly gay woman to be nominated for an acting award, not to mention the first to do so for playing a gay character. Ian McKellen remains the only example of any openly gay person getting nominated for an Oscar for playing a gay person (in “Gods and Monsters”).
But thats getting ahead of ourselves. For now, enjoy the trailer (and just try not to tear up):
