READ MORE: With ‘The Crowded Room’ and ‘The Revenant,’ Is Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar Finally in the Cards?
If any duo is going to give Jennifer Lawrence and David O. Russell a run for their awards money this Christmas, it will undoubtedly be the Oscar-winning collaborators Alejandro G. Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. After their triumphant “Birdman” victories last year, the two are back in the race with “The Revenant,” a 19th century Western thriller allegedly shot using only natural lighting. Even better, they have Leonardo DiCaprio in a grueling performance that could finally land him the gold.
The official synopsis reads: “Inspired by true events, ‘The Revenant’ is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption.”
“The Revenant” opens in select theaters Christmas Day, followed by a nationwide expansion on January 8, 2016.
