“…modern comedy is largely based on jokes about bodily liquids. A picture like ‘Something About Mary,’ the big laugh is someone had cum in their hair, or some guy’s penis getting stuck in the zipper. It’s too easy. I just think it’s more fun to find it a different way, those are more shock effects… you know, she’s got cum in her hair!” director Peter Bogdanovich told us last fall. “But there’s very few people who know how to do this other kind of comedy. It’s a delicate balance between reality and heightened reality.” That other kind of comedy he’s referring to is screwball, and the filmmaker takes on the old fashioned laffer in his latest, “She’s Funny That Way.”
Featuring an ensemble cast which includes Owen Wilson, Imogen Poots, Kathryn Hahn, Will Forte, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Aniston, Cybill Shepherd and Lucy Punch, the story follows a Broadway director who falls for a prostitute-turned-actress, leading to an increasingly complex and comedic series of events. Here’s the official synopsis:
Following a 12-year absence from the big screen, Peter Bogdanovich (What’s Up, Doc?, Paper Moon) returns with a screwball comedy/romance with a star-studded cast including Owen Wilson, Imogen Poots, Jennifer Aniston, Will Forte, Kathryn Hahn, Rhys Ifans, Cybill Shepherd, Richard Lewis and a cameo by Quentin Tarantino. Izzy (Poots) is a sex worker who aspires to become an actress. During a session with theatre and film director Arnold (Wilson), who’s about to embark on a Broadway production, she is offered $30 000 to do something else with her life. A stunned Izzy accepts – a decision that affects virtually every other character in the film. A classic comedy with nods to Hollywood films of the ’30s and ’40s; She’s Funny That Way is a witty and charming feature with a top comedic ensemble.
“She’s Funny That Way” opens in theaters and on VOD on August 14th. Watch below.
