It’s just where my headspace is at this week, but I can’t help but wonder where “The 33” might show up on the fall festival calendar. It didn’t appear on the Toronto or Venice slates, so perhaps Telluride will roll the dice with the movie? Maybe New York? Either way, with a moving true-story tale and an awards season berth, it’s one to keep an eye on.
Patricia Riggen directs the star-studded ensemble — Antonio Banderas, Lou Diamond Phillips, Rodrigo Santoro, Juliette Binoche, Gabriel Byrne, Juan Pablo Raba, Kate del Castillo — re-telling of the August 5, 2010, a cave-in at a San José copper mine in Chile that trapped 33 workers 2,300 feet below the Earth. The event became a media sensation, and the miraculous survival of the workers even more so.
“The 33” opens on November 13th. Watch below.
