Indiewire has published its annual running list of the year’s highest-grossing independent films.
The unsurprising takeaway? Plenty of moviegoers are interested in watching stories about women.
In fact, four of the top 5 films on the list as it currently stands feature women leads: Helen Mirren in “Women in Gold” (#1), Julianne Moore in “Still Alice” (#3), Maika Monroe in “It Follows” (#4) and Carey Mulligan in “Far From the Madding Crowd” (#5). Blythe Danner in “I’ll See You in My Dreams” (#7) plays the other female protagonist in the top 10, making for three women over the age of 50 on that list.
Since there are many more movies about men than women on the whole, the number of women-centered projects peter out in #11-20, though there is still female-centric representation in the Amy Winehouse doc “Amy” (#13) and by Aislinn Derbez in “A La Mala” (#16).
