Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn Get Career Boosts From 'True Detective'

As “True Detective” winds to a close Sunday night—with a near-two-hour finale—what’s next for its quartet of leads?

Colin Farrell has landed the role of a wizard in the “Harry Potter” spinoff “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which already stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller and Alison Sudol. Farrell plays Graves, who meets Hogwarts alumnus Newt Scamander (Redmayne) in New York City, 70 years before the Harry Potter story begins.

“Fantastic Beasts” will mark author J.K. Rowling’s screenwriting debut, and will be directed by David Yates, who helmed the last four “Potter” pictures. David Heyman, who oversaw the entirety of the eight-film franchise topped by “Deathly Hallows – Part 2” in 2011, will produce this prequel set 70 years before “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Obviously, Warner Bros. wants to keep this money-making property alive.

Vince Vaughn clearly wants to buff his dramatic chops. After “True Detective,” he will usher into Mel Gibson’s World War II drama “Hacksaw Ridge.” He’s set to star opposite Andrew Garfield and Sam
Worthington in Gibson’s first film since 2006’s “Apocalypto.”
Distributed by Lionsgate, “Hacksaw” will shoot in Australia.

Rachel McAdams will next be seen in Toronto as a muckraking journo in Tom McCarthy’s Catholic church scandal drama “Spotlight” and, later, in the latest “Sherlock Holmes” film. Though hopefully her steely portrayal of hardened police officer Ani Bezzerides in “True Detective” will spell further dramatic roles. Meanwhile, Taylor Kitsch was offered the lead in “The Raid” remake last year, though details of that project, supposed to begin filming this year, have yet to shake out.
