The film marks the first feature shot in the Colombian Amazon in 30 years. The black-and-white feature follows Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and lone survivor of his people, along with two scientists who build a friendship with him over a 40-year period. The film draws inspiration from actual journals from explorers who traveled through the Colombian Amazon in search of the Yakruna plant.
“Embrace of the Serpent” received the top Art Cinema award at Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. It is expected to play during the fall festival season and is scheduled for an early 2016 theatrical release.
