Miley Cyrus hosted the MTV Video Music Awards last night, and it was pretty much a disaster… until the very end. After a series of awfully unfunny sketches, racial missteps (referencing her “mammy,” igniting a feud with Nicki Minaj over race representation at awards shows) and over-the-top proclamations that Miley likes her weed, she led a genuine show stopper by bringing out a dozen or so past contestants on “Ru Paul’s Drag Race” to perform alongside her as she debuted her bizarro new single “Dooo It!”
The single, as we now know, is part of a Beyonce-style secret album that Cyrus announced was available for free on her website immediately. You can listen to that here. It’s called “Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz” and it’s a collaboration with Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. We’ve had it on rotation all morning and while it’s definitely flawed (and bloated at 23 tracks), we can’t help but appreciate Cyrus’ continued determination to dooo whatever the hell she wants. Though in that regard, maybe hosting award shows should no longer be a part of that mission.
