Trailer Watch: Meryl Streep Narrates 'Shout Gladi Gladi' Doc About Maternal Care for African Women

The trailer for “Shout Gladi Gladi,” a new doc narrated by Meryl Streep, includes a startling statistic: In Africa, one in 39 women die during childbirth. “Shout Gladi Gladi” focuses on the efforts of a group of dedicated individuals working towards lowering those numbers and providing better maternal care for African women and girls. The team, led by philanthropist and former nurse Ann Gloag, treats obstetric fistula, an injury resulting from childbirth that leaves mothers incontinent (and social pariahs).

The spot quotes Desmond Tutu, who said, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” In this case, hope comes in the form of treating, educating and empowering African girls and women.

The Gladi Gladi ceremony — after which the doc is named for — is a celebration, complete with singing and dancing, that occurs when the girls and women return home after being cured.

“Shout Gladi Gladi” opens in NY and LA October 2, with more cities to follow.
