I recently watched a short film called “Offline Dating” where a guy walks around London asking girls on dates. He gets rejected. A lot. Filmmakers can learn a lot from this guy, because networking is a lot like dating: you need to accept that you’re not entitled to anyone’s time or attention. You need to give as much as you get. If you back a stranger into a corner and prattle on about your project without expressing any curiosity for their work (apart from what they can do for you) you will get rejected.
In this bonus from Episode 4 of Raindance Step & Repeat, Tiska Wiedermann, Creative Director of Raindance Canada, makes her point about how to ask for things in an intelligent way that opens the door to opportunity instead of slamming it back in your face.
