“The Martian,” starring Matt Damon as a space explorer trapped on Mars and Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig as two of the women who are supporting A Great Man, despite all its whirligigs and special effects might be more commercial material, not Oscar. Which is why 20th Century Fox bumped the film from a late November to October 2 release, in 2D and 3D.
A botched mission on Mars finds astronaut Mark Watney (Damon) presumed dead and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded by himself on the hostile planet. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work to bring “the Martian” home, while his crew-mates concurrently plot a daring rescue mission.
The new trailer makes more room for women, including Chastain and Kate Mara as Watney’s far-flung crew-mates. But what is Wiig doing in the film? We don’t know. Directed by Ridley Scott from a script by Drew Goddard, the rest of the cast includes Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
