We made our affections clear for Zac Efron’s EDM fable “We Are You Friends” last Friday, but audiences did not follow suit. In 2,333 theaters, the film grossed just $1.8 million — or $772 per theater. Which followed “Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure” and “Delgo” as the third worst opening ever for a new release with a theater count of over 2,000 theaters.
We suspect this will just be a case of down but not out for Efron, who has the sequel to “Neighbours” and the “Baywatch” movie on his horizon. But still… Not good news for a film we definitely think deserved better.
In other box office news, Lily Tomlin starrer “Grandma” continued to show signs of breaking out beyond a limited release. Going from 4 to 19 theaters, the Paul Weitz-directed film took in $309,000 — averaging $16,263 per theater (by far the best average of any film in release).
See when “Grandma” is coming to a theater near you here (and go see it when it does).
