FIRST LOOK: Mickey Mouse in “Shifting Gears”

The best cartoon series on television right now is not a half-hour sitcom, or a boys action adventure. In fact, its the revival of Mickey Mouse that is running as 3-minute interstitials on The Disney Channel. Produced by Paul Rudish, these shorts are as cutting edge as… as… well, as Steamboat Willie must have seemed in 1928. Fast, funny, and artistically superior to almost anything else around. 

The latest one is debuting this Friday September 18th at 9:25 pm ET/PT and we have a clip. In Switching Gears, Mickey wants to go surfing, but must try a variety of tactics to get his car to take him there when it refuses. Clay Morrow directs and here’s an sneak peek:

The previous two releases are particularly good. Wish Upon A Coin, directed by William Reiss, is a Disney mash-up masterpiece. Movie Time, directed by Dave Wasson, is an epic of comic destruction.
