Magnolia Pictures has acquired Norwegian disaster picture “The Wave.” The thriller, which is enjoying its international premiere at TIFF, is Norway’s official entry for this year’s Best Foreign Language Academy Award.

Based on a fatal tsunami that hit Norway’s Tafjord in 1934, “The Wave” follows a geologist who learns of the imminent disaster with only ten minutes to spare.

“‘The Wave’ is an incredibly accomplished action spectacular with phenomenal special effects,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “But it’s also beautiful filmmaking with multi-dimensional characters and terrific acting. We’re excited that Norway has chosen the film to represent their country at the Oscars this year.”

“The Wave” is aiming for a U.S. release date in early 2016. Watch an exclusive clip above.
