READ MORE: Exclusive ‘MA’ Poster Provides a Vision of Modern Day Mother Mary
Celia Rowlson-Hall’s feature debut “Ma,” which premiered to great reviews at the Venice International Film Festival, now has a teaser trailer that is equal parts visceral and transfixing.
According to the official synopsis, “In this modern-day vision of Mother Mary’s pilgrimage, a woman encounters a world full of bold characters that are alternately terrifying and sublime. ‘MA’ is a journey into the visceral and the abstract, interweaving ritual, performance, and the body as sculpture, leading us to imagine a new ending to this familiar journey. The virgin mother gives birth to our savior, but is also challenged to save herself.”
Rowlson-Hall, whose credits include choreographer, director, writer and star (among others), relies on physical gesticulations to allow her film to play out dialogue-free against the unforgiving and often beautiful background of the American Southwest.
