Guillermo del Toro is the kind of imaginative director who makes you think, “I wonder what it would be like to live inside that man’s brain.” The answer is easier to find than you might think thanks to a 2012 video that he made for the “Cronos” Criterion Collection DVD. The feature, called “Welcome to Bleak House,” shows the director giving a tour of his “man cave,” which is actually an entire house devoted to his cool and creepy collectibles.

In the video, the “Crimson Peak” filmmaker reveals that he designed his “Bleak House” as a “compression chamber” for creativity, modeling the space after European curiosity cabinets and the original Disney Studios research library. A sampling of the thousands of items that call Bleak House home include classic Disney memorabilia, bird specimens, octopus tentacles, skulls, skeletons, and even, supposedly, mermaids.
