READ MORE: PODCAST: Why We’re Excited to See ‘The Revenant’
They say don’t judge a movie by its trailer, but the new preview for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “The Revenant” is a bold, blistering trailer that suggests nothing short of a masterwork. The revenge drama reunites Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezski after their Oscar victories for “Birdman” last year, and it looks like they’ll be back in the conversation this year along with their leading man, the still Oscar-less Leonardo DiCaprio.
While reports from the film’s set painted quite the hellish picture, it seems the blood, sweat and tears have paid off, as the stunning official trailer not only shows off the jaw-dropping camerawork and natural lighting, but also puts a tighter focus on the film’s plot. DiCaprio stars as American explorer Hugh Glass, who is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own team, led by Tom Hardy’s John Fitzgerald. Bruised and alive, Glass embarks through the wilderness and a harsh winter in the pursuit of vengeance and redemption. Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter co-star.
Many pundits wondered whether or not the film would be ready in time for this year’s awards race, and the trailer confirms that it absolutely will be. Looks like we have a potential power player on our hands.
“The Revenant” opens in limited release on December 25, before expanding nationwide January 8.
