Tom Hardy was in Toronto this weekend promoting “Legend,” in which he plays real life twins Reggie and Ronnie Kray — one of whom just happened to be gay. At the press conference for the film, a reporter from Daily Xtra quite daringly used that as an entry point into a question about Hardy’s own sexuality. And Hardy shut him down.
“In the film, your character Ronnie is very open about his sexuality,” asked Xtra’s Grame Coleman. “But given interviews you’ve done in the past, your own sexuality seems a bit more ambiguous. Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality?”
“What on earth are you on about?” Hardy responded.
“I was referring to an interview given to Attitude magazine a few years ago,” Coleman responded.
In that 2008 interview, Hardy said the following: ““I’ve played with everything and everyone. But I’m not into men sexually. I love the form and the physicality but the gay sex bit does nothing for me.”
Given that interview, the fact that “Legend” does portray an openly bisexual (at least) historical person and that Coleman works for a LGBT-focused website, we feel Hardy was a bit too dismissive. You can watch the full press conference here and decide for yourself:
