Just in time for Halloween, we’ve got a tutorial on ghosts for you, specifically, how to create a ghost effect in-camera. In the above video from RocketJump Film School, we learn about how to create Pepper’s Ghost, the illusion technique which dates back to the 1500s. Disneyland’s “Haunted Mansion” and the Hogwarts Express at Universal Studios both use this effect, and a modified version is still used in modern tele-prompters.
All you need is one light, a large sheet of glass or plexiglass and a dark background for your ghost. Plus, another light for the ghost. It’s a quick, cheap way to create the ghost effect without VFX. The video explains the upside to doing this effect in-camera, including the ability to follow your actor around in real-time.
