'Freeheld" Holds Up OK In Second Weekend; 'Stonewall' Drops Off The Chart

The critical disappointment of this year’s crop of fall LGBT films continued to prove mostly disappointing commercially too this holiday weekend.

Lionsgate’s "Freeheld" — which stars Julianne Moore and Ellen Page as a lesbian couple fighting for civil partnership rights when one of them is diagnosed with terminal cancer — expanded from 5 to 51 theaters this weekend and jumped 148%, grossing $94,000 for a so-so per-theatre-average of $1,843.

So far, "Freeheld" has grossed $144,054. That’s not a great number, but certainly better than the fate that met "Stonewall." That film didn’t even report numbers this weekend after accumulating $184,062 after 14 days on Thursday — which seems like it will stand as close to its final gross.
