Oscar season kicks off long before the public gets a chance to see the movies vying for the big prize. Eventually, though, every in the race must get released—though not in the same way each time. This week, three major awards titles hit theaters (“Room,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Beasts of No Nation”), and they couldn’t be more different: A small drama mainly focused on two performances, a sweeping period piece and a violent wartime tale set in an unnamed African country, this trio face very different prospects, both at the box office and with Oscar voters. How will they fare in the days and weeks ahead?
That’s the starting point for this week’s episode of Screen Talk. Co-hosts Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson also touch on other prospective nominees, as well as the strange case of Anne’s Facebook message from Quentin Tarantino this week, and Jennifer Lawrence’s bold open letter.
