When a gun appears in the first act, it has to go off sometime in the third, does it not? That’s more or less the design of “Bleeding Heart,” a new indie starring Jessica Biel and Zosia Mamet about a even-keel yoga instructor (Biel) who discovers she has biological sister who’s something of a wild child (Mamet). Unfortunately, a belligerent and abusive boyfriend (Joe Anderson), complicates their reunion. The film made its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Reserved yoga instructor May (Jessica Biel) lives a peaceful, clean-living life with her boyfriend. Her carefully maintained equilibrium is thrown out of balance by the arrival of her long-lost biological sister Shiva (Zosia Mamet), a street-smart yet naive young woman caught working the streets and trapped in an abusive relationship. May feels compelled to rescue the hapless Shiva but as she takes steps to pull Shiva back from the edge she finds herself increasingly drawn out of her sedate world and deeper into Shiva’s chaotic one.
Directed by Diane Bell, “Bleeding Heart” hits theaters December 11th via Gravitas Releasing. Watch the first trailer below.
