Paul Thomas Anderson and Joanna Newsom have become creative, collaborative partners over the last year or two. The musician had a small role and narrated the director’s “Inherent Vice,” and the filmmaker returned the favor by helming a couple of music videos for the artist. The first, “Sapokanikan,” dropped in August, and the latest “Divers” — the title track off Newsom’s latest album — has just finished a theatrical run (read our review) and has now landed online. And of course, it’s must watch stuff.
Shot in the studio of artist Kim Keever, who provided the artwork for Divers, the promo finds Newsom stepping into the Keever’s artistic landscapes, singing the seven-minute track. It’s a simple premise, but a lovely, and evocative approach, marrying Newsom’s complex and intimate songs, with an appropriately ethereal backdrop. Watch below.
Divers is in stores now.
