Callous human indifference, global warming, dinosaurs and now… SPACE? Just as Blue Sky appeared to be getting into the business of developing riskier, more diverse creative projects for its next slate of films, along chugs another “Ice Age” entry into the mix. While the first film was admittedly a critical and commercial crowd-pleaser, it became so successful that even Blue Sky couldn’t go two or three years without an “Ice Age” sequel in its back pocket.
And yes, the films are still juggernauts at the global box office. Will U.S. audiences reject them anytime soon? Not likely, given the franchise’s billion dollar stature. In keeping with the animation studio’s tradition, Blue Sky has unveiled a new “Scrat”-centered short (the 9th entry so far), where the indomitable little prehistoric squirrel faces off against time and space to secure his precious acorn once more.
“Ice Age: Collision Course” arrives in U.S. theaters July 22, 2016.
