There is some justice in the world: Todd Haynes’ extraordinary lesbian romance "Carol" had a huge opening weekend, grossing $248,149 from just 4 theaters. That made for a $62,037 per-theater-average, the third highest of the year after "Steve Jobs" and "Sicario." It also was enough for "Carol" to have already outgrossed another much-discussed (for very different reasons) 2015 LGBT release, "Stonewall." That film totaled $187,674 by the end of its run (where it was in 129 theaters).
"Carol" expands next weekend (go see it!) and could very well have outgrossed another lesbian drama, "Freeheld" (which took in $573,335) by this time next week.
