Nearly just as iconic as the publication itself are The New Yorker’s hilarious and often baffling pencil-drawn comics. To help solve some of the mysteries behind the cartoons is the documentary “Very Semi-Serious: A Partially Thorough Portrait of New Yorker Cartoonists.”

Providing a glimpse into the process behind the creation of the artwork, the film follows cartoon editor Bob Mankoff as he reveals the inner-workings of the quirky department and the past and future of the beloved institution.
Directed by Leah Wolchok, “Very Semi-Serious” will air on HBO on December 7, after its limited theatrical release on November 20.
