The French artist and director known simply as JR has announced today that his short film, “Ellis,” which stars Robert De Niro and was written by Eric Roth, will be distributed digitally by iTunes in over 85 countries. The short film will also be screened in over 800 communities and will partner with Facebook for a 24-hour preview today, November 19.
The short film is set in the abandoned Ellis Island Hospital complex and uses JR’s art installations to illustrate the story of the immigrants who built America.
“America is a nation of immigrants. We came in waves; we came in trickles; we came in chains. Some of us were running away from oppression; some were dragged from our homes; many were chasing a better life,” said Jane Rosenthal, producer and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises. “Through ‘Ellis’ we hope to have captured the spirit of our past and allow an opportunity for discussion around the current immigration crisis.”
The film will be released November 20 on iTunes.
