If you’re still mourning the loss of The Dissolve, some good news: Writers Scott Tobias, Keith Phipps, and Tasha Robinson have launched a new podcast called The Next Picture Show, which effectively translates the site’s Movie of the Week feature into audio form. Every week, the three — joined in future installments by fellow Dissolve alum Rachel Handler, with Genevieve Koski producing — will take on a classic film inspired by a current release, devoting one “Keynote” episode to the older film, and one “Forum” episode to tying the two films together, along with further recommendations for current viewing.
The inaugural episode, which is now up here and available on iTunes is devoted to “All the President’s Men,” the iconic ’70s conspiracy thriller about Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s uncovering of the Watergate scandal. The second, available later this week, will bring in “Spotlight,” a movie that’s inspired numerous comparisons to Alan J. Pakula’s classic, but also presents fascinating contrasts. Future episodes will pair “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2” with Kenji Fukasaku’s “Battle Royale,” and Pixar’s “Toy Story” and “The Good Dinosaur.”
The Next Picture Show doesn’t have a website yet, but you can follow them on Twitter at @NextPicturePod, and subscribe to the show’s RSS feed here. Further time spent reading this post is only keeping you from hearing Robinson describe Dustin Hoffman’s Bernstein as “the ultimate manspreader,” so get listening.
