Alice seems a tad older and wiser in Disney’s latest trailer for its followup to 2010’s billion-dollar success “Alice in Wonderland.” This time Tim Burton has handed the directing reigns over to James Bobin, the wizard behind HBO’s “Ali G Show” and “Flight of the Conchords,” as well as the “Muppets Movie” and its sequel “Muppets Most Wanted.”
Disney’s eerie new trailer takes a cue from Warner Bros./DC’s popular “Suicide Squad,” evoking a fervent ticking clock racing against time. In this darker chapter of Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s tale, Alice is fueled by a mission to rescue the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) from Time himself (a creepy Sacha Baron Cohen).
Other “Alice in Wonderland” holdovers include Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Mia Wasikowska, with the voices of Michael Sheen, Stephen Fry and Alan Rickman. Newcomer Rhys Ifans is set to play Zanik Hightopp, the Mad Hatter’s father — who helps Alice rescue her son from the queen and half-man, half-clock villain.
“Alice Through the Looking Glass” opens in theaters on May 27, 2016.
