Todd Haynes’ sublime romance “Carol” has been a force to reckon with since premiering to acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Nearly half a year later, awards buzz for the film is stronger than ever, and two new clips from the drama have surfaced that prove why stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are in the thick of the Oscar races for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.
Based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Price of Salt,” the film chronicles the blossoming romance between two women in 1950’s New York City, one married (two-time Oscar winner Blanchett) and the other a lonely department store worker (Mara). Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler and Jake Lacy also star.
The two clips from the film below are full of the intoxicating chemistry that makes the film such an emotional masterwork. The first is a glimpse at the pair’s initial brief encounter, while the second shows their first date, where nerves are high and a deep attraction is instant. “Carol” opens in select theaters on November 20.
