AMC is doubling down on cult comic books: With the wild success of “The Walking Dead,” the cable network is getting ready to release an even more challenging series in “Preacher,” a religious superhero story — of sorts.

Developed for TV by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, “Preacher” stars Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer, a small-town Texas preacher inhabited by a mysterious entity that provides him with an unusual power. Yet Jesse’s goal — and thus the series’ — is more vast than just keeping the peace (or enforcing it). He, his ex-girlfriend (Ruth Negga) and a vampire (Joseph Gilgun) are looking to find God — literally.

Watch the first trailer above. “Preacher” is set to debut on AMC in mid-2016.
