A grand total of 305 feature films are eligible for the 88th Academy Awards, to be handed out Sunday, February 28 2016. The number is slightly down from last year’s 323.
To be eligible, a film must open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles
County by midnight, December 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive
days. The Academy defines a feature film as one with a running time of more than 40 minutes, which has been exhibited
theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format. (Find the full list of eligibility rules here.)
The nominees will be announced live the morning of Thursday, January 14 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
