'Carol' and 'Tangerine' Are Kicking Off Awards Season With Major Wins

After both nabbing nominations for best feature at the Independent Spirit Awards last week, Todd Haynes’ “Carol” and Sean Baker’s “Tangerine” are continuing to prove major players in awards season.

Monday night, “Tangerine” won two Gotham Awards, including the audience prize and a breakthrough actor trophy for Mya Taylor (also a Spirit Award nominee). Then yesterday “Carol” swept the New York Film Critics Circle’s annual awards, winning best film, best director, best screenplay and best best cinematography.
