'Creed,' 'Empire' Top NAACP Image Award Nominations

Ryan Coogler’s “Creed” and F. Gary Gray’s “Straight Outta Compton” led the NAACP Image Awards film nominations today, receiving nods for motion picture, screenplay, and director. Michael B. Jordan, the affable actor who portrays Apollo Creed’s son, Adonis, also notched a slot in the race for entertainer of the year, along with both executive producer Shonda Rhimes and “How to Get Away with Murder” star Viola Davis. “Creed” and “Straight Outta Compton” will compete for the top prize with Netflix’s “Beasts of No Nation,” NFL expose “Concussion,” starring Will Smith, and festival favorite “Dope.”

In TV, Lee Daniels’ “Empire” proved mighty once again as it earned a whopping 12 nominations, mostly from the recording categories. It will face off against BET’s “Being Mary Jane,” ABC’s “How To Get Away With Murder,” Starz’s “Power” and ABC’s “Scandal” in the outstanding drama series category. ABC’s well-received”Black-ish” also enjoyed a strong showing, with 10 nominations.

Its star, Anthony Anderson, will host this year’s awards, airing live on TV One on Feb. 5, 2016.
