It’s fascinating to track the various idiosyncrasies in the year-end lists. Many individual ballots are often interesting indicators of a person’s taste or their various biases and interests. But it’s especially telling if a publication’s list features a host of non-consensus choices or left-field releases because it illustrates the unique tastes of its contributors. Case in point: Slant Magazine’s Top 25 Films of 2015.
Though, Slant places “Mad Max: Fury Road” at the top of their list, their top 10 features a number of distinctive choices. Some of these include Michael Mann’s “Blackhat,” a critically championed movie that nonetheless garnered a mixed reception upon release, Laurie Anderson’s essay film “Heart of a Dog,” Pedro Costa’s dreamlike “Horse Money,” and the crowd-pleasing aesthetic wonder Gregory Jacobs’ “Magic Mike XXL.” Standard disclaimer: The list is reprinted below, but follow the link to read the writeups.
