READ MORE: Review: Todd Haynes’ ‘Carol’ is a Masterful Lesbian Romance Starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara
From Cannes sensation to awards season power player, Todd Hayne’s sublime romance “Carol” has become one of the year’s most acclaimed darlings. Currently sitting on top of multiple Golden Globe, SAG and Critics Choice Award nominations, the movie is making quite the charge to the Oscar stage, and Indiewire is excited to debut an exclusive featurette with Haynes and his extraordinary cast.
Based on the Patricia Highsmith novel “The Price of Salt,” the film chronicles the blossoming romance between two women in 1950’s New York City, one a married housewife (two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett) and the other a lonely department store worker (Rooney Mara). Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler and Jake Lacy also star.
In the featurette above, Blanchett, Paulson and Haynes talk about shooting the film using 16mm cameras in order to not only preserve the grainy look of celluloid, but also to achieve a hyperrealism that was new to the director’s aesthetic.
“Carol” is now playing in theaters.
